NEXT DAY

Oh, the Places (We’ll) Go

Out of This World

If you’ve ever looked out into the vast night sky, chances are, you were impressed. The moon, the Milky Way, meteors, and so much more give us a nightly light show that can rival any holiday attraction. But with so much fascination, we’re also left with so much wonder. Are we really made from stardust? Is the moon really made of cheese? All right, there's only one way to find, and that’s by joining us on Space Shuttle Kinda in 5...4...3...2...1... Lift off!

DAY 3

what you’ll need

  • Your Camp Kinda toolkit
  • Black construction paper
  • A few drinking straws
  • Ribbon or yarn (optional)
  • 2 pieces of corrugated cardboard (5-in. square)
  • 2 round candies (hard ones with a hole in the middle, like Lifesavers)
  • 1 round pencil (sharpened)
  • 2 rubber bands

          Ask About Today

Which planet would you most want to visit and why? What do you predict you’d see there?

Unfortunately, online videos often start with short advertisements. Remind your campers to click the "Skip" button as soon as they can to move ahead to the video.

          Tour the Space Shuttle

          YouTube thumbnail

Before we launch, we have to get familiar with our space shuttle, and it just so happens to be the shuttle that delivered one of the world’s most famous telescopes—the Hubble Space Telescope. Major General Charlie Bolden and Dr. Kathy Sullivan, who were onboard for the special delivery to outer space, are ready to show us around. Use your mouse to explore and get a 360-view of the shuttle.

Remember: Online videos often start with advertisements. (Annoying, we agree!) Click the "Skip" button as soon as you can to move ahead to the video.

          Rocket Basics

It’s not rocket science? Maybe it is, actually. There’s a real science (hint: it’s physics) behind launching a rocket into the unknown. Take a look at this infographic that explains how a rocket works.

          Views from the Hubble

Now that we’ve taken off, take a look at these images that Hubble has captured over the years. Click on pictures that interest you to learn more. Get familiar with these because we should see a few of them right from our own shuttle!

          Space Experiments

Simple tasks can be a bit more challenging on board a space shuttle. Check out these five space experiments, from washing your hands (not so simple) to adding dye to a floating ball of water (really not so simple!).

          Roving Over Mars

          YouTube thumbnail

Without the help of rovers, we wouldn’t be able to know as much as we do about life and conditions on other planets. Check out the curious life of a Mars rover in action.

          Moon Life

Landing and walking on the moon was an amazing accomplishment for human beings. So much so that we have never returned since our first landings in 1969. But recently, astronauts have been testing the theory that someday, humans will be able to live on the moon and other areas of outer space. Do you believe it?

          Rocket Launching 101

Make your own rocket to launch—or a whole set of them! Decorate them with markers, and see how high they can fly! You can also launch them horizontally across a table. Take note of how far they go!

          Got Rover?

We’re in space, but now what?! We need a space rover so that we can land on hard surfaces like the moon and other planets. Follow the instructions or watch the video to make your own so we can answer some of the space’s many mysteries.

Share your work! We'd love to see it. Ask a parent to email a photo or video to us or share it on Instagram or Twitter by tagging @KindaGuide.

          Space Workout I

          YouTube thumbnail

Before their missions, astronauts undergo intense training to ensure that they can survive in the treacherous conditions of space. Their space suits are heavy and it’s hard to stay grounded without gravity, so endurance and muscle strength are important. So get ready to train like an astronaut!
